Rare breed chicken descriptions
Appenzeller - Dalmatian of
the Chicken world with a funky hair do!

Araucana - Alert and active. Prolific layers of strong-shelled blue/green eggs.
Barbu d'Uccle – Cute
little hens with feathered feet and a beard. We have Mille Fleur.
Barnevelder – Active compact breed, lays brown speckled eggs. Attractive and unusual plumage.

Brahama - Big laid back chicken which has feathered legs. We have them in Blues and Gold.

Cochin – Large feathery bird, with feathered feet. Originally a dual purpose breed. Cream coloured eggs. We have them in Black and Cuckoo.
Cream Legbar - Great hens, comical with a "hair do" and they lay blue/olive eggs. Sold from 6 weeks.
Derbyshire Redcap – Graceful action and well balanced. Sturdy bird carrying excellent breast meat and good egg producers too.
Fayoumi
– Alert, graceful and very active. Ancient Egyptian Breed, selectively
bred for egg production. Hardy and early maturing. Classified as a Rare
Breed. We have both Silver and Gold Pencilled.

Kraienkoppe - Very rare and unusual - great layer and character.
Leghorn – Very sprightly and alert. Good layers of large white eggs. We have them in Blue and Black.

Maran - A popular hen which lays deep brown eggs. Ours are Cuckoo Marans.

Norfolk Grey - A bold alert
chicken with black with grey lacing in the neck . Classified as a rare
breed.

Orpington – Originates from Orpington! Active large chicken, similar to Cochins but with no feathers on the feet. We have Buffs, Blues and Blacks.

Pekin – Bold but very docile. Wonderful bantam. Good layers of tinted eggs. We have Buffs, Partridge and White.
Plymouth Rock, Barred - A Lovely docile chicken and a good layer.

Polish - Sprightly and erect. Great characters. I have found them to be exceptional layers of white eggs.
Rhode Island Red - Lovely
looking, deep chestnut in colour.

Sicilian Buttercup –
Upright, bold and active. Naturally friendly. Has the distinctive saucer-shaped
cup comb. Classified as a Rare Breed.

Silkie – stylish compact
and lively. Silky plumage rather than the usual feathers. We have White
and Blacks.

Sussex - Graceful, vigorous and well proportioned. Good dual purpose breed. Eggs are tinted. We have Light Sussex hens and bantams, Silver Sussex bantams and Speckled Sussex hens.

Vorwerk - Striking Bird. Lively but not timid. - Sold from 8 weeks. –
Welsummer - Upright, alert and active. The traditional “farmyard” hen. Good layer of large brown eggs generally mottled with brown spots. We have bantam and large fowl.
Wyandotte – graceful,
well balanced, alert and active, but docile. Good layers of tinted eggs.
We have Blue or Black bantams, and Buff Laced hens.
Yokohama – one of the earliest long tailed breeds. Stylish and pheasant-like. Classified as a rare breed. We have White and Red Saddled.
